The U.S. Needs an Additional 225,000 Cybersecurity Workers

According to data from CyberSeek, the U.S. needs over 200,000 additional cybersecurity workers to address the talent gap.

CyberSeek is a joint initiative by NIST’s NICE program, CompTIA, and Lightcast, aimed at providing detailed and actionable data about the cybersecurity job market.

According to CyberSeek, the U.S. has over 1.2 million cybersecurity workers, but they only fill 85% of the available positions, leaving a need for 225,200 more workers.

From May 2023 to April 2024, the total number of cybersecurity job openings is nearly 470,000, with the highest demand for network and systems engineers, system administrators, cybersecurity engineers, cybersecurity analysts, and information systems security officers.

The CyberSeek report states: “The main findings from CyberSeek data indicate that the reduction in tech hiring for most of 2023 has impacted cybersecurity jobs. Over the 12 months from May 2023 to April 2024, job postings for all tech occupations decreased by 37%. Job postings for cybersecurity positions decreased by 29%, indicating that cybersecurity is less affected by the hiring slowdown compared to the overall IT industry.”
